Ike…the Aftermath
September 14th, 2008 by Kevin
Well it looks like we survived so far. The last few days have been pretty crazy. For my sake of remembering, I’m going to jog down some memories:
- Wednesday - I leave Houston for Atlanta.
- Thursday - In Atlanta. As Ike grows larger I decide I should fly home home to be with Corinne.
- Friday - We hustle to buy groceries and water. Things look scarse everywhere. My parents come to stay with us.
- Saturday - Ike hits early in the a.m. Flooding is rampant. Trees down everywhere. We hear Galvaston is hit hard. Power goes. No phones. No cell service. No mobile internet. My in-laws get a tree through their roof. Workers come by and charge 4700.00 to remove. We drive to my parents house. It survived, but lots of trees down. Lots of water everywhere. I cut a tree out that fell across my neighborhood’s entrance.
- Sunday - It looks like a war zone. My neighbor heads to Dallas. He needs dialasys and can’t get it here. I hear generators are being sold on the side of the freeway. I stand in line 5 hours. We want 2, but get 1 for 550.00. No gas though. I’ll try to find some in the a.m. We get to watch 2 hours of news and 2 episodes of COPS off of the 1 gallon I had for the mower. Rumor is 3 weeks for power. Missed flight to Chicago. Guess I’m not going?
- Monday - Get online about 1 a.m. finally. Here I am. Going to find gas in a few hours after curfew lifts. Airports should reopen today.
- Monday p.m. - Stood in line for another 2 hours. Got another generator. The price went up to 699.00. Electric crews drove by while in line. Everyone applauded. I couldn’t find gas today. I resort to siphoning it from my car. By the end of the day, I’m empty. We get the fridge online. We BBQ steak for all the neighbors before it goes bad. Everyone comes by and charges up their cell phones. Get word our friend Cody passed out at home. She fell and hit her head. they go by ambulance to closest hospital. It takes hours to see a doctor. We haven’t heard back yet.
- Tuesday - Get in line for gas @ 5 a.m. It takes 3 hours. I get 2 five gallon jugs of gas and 1/2 a tank in my truck. Get word that my flights for work have been canceled. I am able to get a signal on my pc. Posted a few pics online here.
